City of Lyon
Lyon is France’s first largest city after Paris and one of the country’s most influential urban, economic and cultural centres. Founded as Lugdunum in 43 BC, Lyon was the capital of Roman Gaul and has retained a remarkable Roman heritage, visible today in its ancient theatres and archaeological sites, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage. Strategically located at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, Lyon has long been a major crossroads of trade, knowledge and innovation. Today, it is a leading centre for research and higher education, as well as an internationally recognised culinary capital, renowned for its gastronomy, its historic bouchons lyonnais, and its enduring influence on French culinary tradition.
